Focus: Ori Kami
Good morning! Today we are sharing some projects using Ori Kami.
Design Inspiration: Origami, Folded Paper
Fun Facts: Did you know that the name "Ori Kami" comes from "ori" meaning folding, and "kami," which means paper? Most people probably know this Japanese art form as simply "origami." The sentiments in this set correspond to the animals' symbolism:
- Crane = peace, happiness, long life
- Fish = strength, courage
- Butterflies = marital happiness
Creative Ideas:
These images are just perfect for paper piecing! Here I stamped the origami fish 10 times onto a cardstock that has a lovely gradient of blues. I pieced them together, popping up the front section with foam tape. The dimension helps give the illusion of folded paper! I mounted the fish to a strip of vellum, and stamped the sentiment. I made sure to place my adhesive (more foam tape) under each of the fish, so that it wouldn't be visible from the front of the card.
Here is another example with paper piecing. This time, I stamped the crane a few times onto metallic patterned paper - to mimic the Japanese paper often used in origami. Then, I cut out each section of the crane, making sure to mix-and-match from the different images (If it were actually folded from paper, the design wouldn't be continuous). I also shaded each section with a Copic marker to add depth. Next, I attached the crane to metallic embroidery floss, and "hung" it from a die cut circle. An embossed sentiment and rhinestones finish it off!
This card features a pair of watercolored butterflies. Instead of using my watercolor paints, I used Inktense pencils to color them in, and a water brush to blend everything together. A simple strip of black cardstock grounds the design, and the black pearls help with balance. I stamped the sentiment onto white cardstock, and adhered it to the card with foam tape!
Tasnim also used patterned paper- she stamped the cute elephant and embossed it in white to really pop against the black and white dots. The sentiment (from Label Love) and the elephant are both adhered with foam tape on top of a dry embossed strip of vellum. I love the fun texture of this card!
Here, a flower from Hennah Elements was stamped onto watercolor paper using a waterbased dye ink. This allows the color to be spread when a wet brush is applied - such a cool effect! The hummingbird was then stamped and carefully cut out, and mounted to a 2.75" x 4" textured card base. Finally, the sentiment (from Sohcahtoa) was stamped and embossed in white.
Tasnim created a fun and interactive card that features a spinning butterfly! It was colored with Copic Markers before embossing with gold powder, to ensure that the lines stayed clean. Two butterflies were created and cut out, then adhered together with a piece of thread in between. The butterfly was suspended within the die-cut opening, and the finishing touches include a stamped sentiment and a glorious splatter of gold!
A fabulous (and trendy) watercolored background creates the perfect backdrop for the origami fox on Tasnim's card! That little guy was stamped, colored with Copics, and trimmed. The playful sentiment from Figure Effects was embossed in white onto a strip of black cardstock, and adhered to the bottom of the card. So cute!
